Media and civil organizations held a protest in Fort today (8) against the threat on media personnel and suppression of media institutions.
The protest was organized by the Journalists Against Suppression organizations.
A large number media personnel, members from media and civil society organizations participated in the protest.

He said the government was trying to block the people’s right to information by directly and indirectly pressurizing and threatening media personnel and institutions during the Presidential election period and directly threatening journalists and media institutions after the election.
Jayasekera said that journalist Prageeth Ekneligoda went missing just before the Presidential election and 15 days after he went missing neither the police nor the defence establishment have been able to find any clue to his whereabouts.
Also, the government tried to seal the people’s right to information by trying to seal the Lanka newspaper.
Although it’s been 10 days since the Editor of the Lanka newspaper, Chandana Sirimalwatte has been taken into custody no legal proceedings have been instituted against him, Jayasekera said.
