A Coordinating Secretary to General Sarath Fonseka said the discussions between the UNF leaders and the General held on Thursday (4) to arrive at an agreement about contesting the general election had ended without arriving at a final decision.
The discussion that had taken place from 7 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. was attended by Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, Co-chairmen of the UNF Karu Jayasruiya, Mano Ganeshan and Raif Hakeem and UNP parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake. The General’s Private Secretary Dr. Senaka de Silva had also attended the meeting. |

The UNF leaders had invited the General to take the deputy leadership of the Front and to contest the general election through the UNF. Ravi Karunanayake had said the JVP decision to contest separately would be beneficial at the general election.
However, the General had said that he preferred to contest the general election under the swan symbol with the same coalition that was formed during the Presidential election. He had also said that it was unethical to isolate the JVP that supported him at the Presidential election and therefore would make his final decision after consulting the party as well.
Mano Ganeshan had walked out of the meeting due to a personal disagreement.
A senior UNP parliamentarian said the discussion between the General and the UNP leadership was very cordial and fruitful.
