Rear Admiral Jayanath Sirikumara Colombage who is to assume duties as the Navy Commander on the 26th has been accused of adultery, sources from the Navy headquarters said.

First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa who coordinates affairs of the Sri Lanka Navy had put much pressure on the President to get this adultery appointed as the Navy Commander.

Colombage has been accused of having extra marital affairs with the wives of several of his friends when he served as the Commanding Officer in the South and West. He has been named as a respondent in the divorce case of one of his lawyers being heard at the Gampaha courts.

The case bearing number D4897 is being heard before the Gampaha District court. The case was heard on June 18, 2012. Colombage’s friend who has filed a divorce case against his wife has told court that he has found his wife, Chandima Bambarenda was caught in a room at the Grand Oriental Hotel (GOH) with Colombage.

Colombage has also been accused of having an illicit affair with one of his friends, Lt. Commander Samaraweera’s wife, Sudharshani. Suspicion has been caste on Colombage over Samaraweera’s mysterious death in Mullaitivu.

Samaraweera it is learnt had died when Colombage had ignored calls by Samaraweera for assistance when his craft was under attack by the LTTE.

Colombage has then kept Samaraweera’s beautiful wife as his mistress.

Although it is prohibited in the Navy for officers to have extra marital affairs with female naval officers, Colombage has had several relationships with female naval officers.

Photographs taken of Colombage openly misbehaving with a female sailor had been distributed among members of the Navy. Colombage addresses female naval officers as “nangi” (sister) and he is of the habit of taking such “nangis” to his office and many have seen him misbehaving with them. However, complaints about this matter have not been made since Colombage has maintained that he has close links with First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa.

Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports state that he had managed to secure scholarships to the US through the former ambassador after building a close friendship with her by giving sensitive information of the navy.

He had also earned commission amounting to millions of rupees by the procurement of inferior quality weapons and equipment to the Navy during the period of the war. The MBRL-Gatling rifles purchased by the Navy on a recommendation by Colombage are now rotting in the stores without being used.
