UPFA national list MP, actress, Malini Fonseka has told a journalist after handing her letter of resignation from parliament that it was the stubborn actions of Minister Basil Rajapaksa that had created a mess with regard to the chief ministerial post for the North Central Province.

She has said that her resignation was handed following a request made by an official from the Presidential Secretariat asking her to resign from her seat in parliament to make way for former North Central Province Chief Minister Berty Premalal Dissanayake.

She has observed that the President was saddened by the move. However, after Dissanayake had informed that he did not wish to enter parliament, the Presidential Secretariat had asked her to withdraw her resignation letter.

Mahinda Rajapaksa had in his young days considered marrying Fonseka, who was a popular young actress at the time. However, it was his friend former Chief Justice Sarath Nanda Silva who had got his mother to introduce Shiranthi Wickremasinghe to Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Nevertheless, the whole episode where Fonseka was asked to hand her resignation letter by the Presidential Secretariat and the next directive for her to withdraw the letter after Dissanayake said he did not want to go to parliament is like a mega tele drama.

The Secretary General of parliament, who was unaware that this was part of a mega tele drama, had handed Fonseka’s resignation letter to the Elections Commissioner. Once the Elections Commissioner informs the relevant party secretary to fill the vacancy in parliament, the resignation letter could not be withdrawn on a Presidential directive.

The Secretary General of parliament and the Elections Commissioner are now faced with a problem since they were unaware of the Mahinda-Malini-Berty tele drama.

The actress has however said that she would accept the post if the President offers it to her.
