The political link between former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka and UNP Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa has now distanced. This situation is a result of the clash between Fonseka and MP Tiran Alles. Attempts by Fonseka’s theoretician, Western Provincial Councilor Shiral Lakthileka to re-build the link between Premadasa and Fonseka have failed.
Fonseka had recently said that it was better to work under some one like Ranil Wickremesinghe than be in an alliance or party with Premadasa. He had said that a few people around him had objected to his desire to form a broad opposition alliance with the UNP and other opposition political parties, but that now he was able to carry out his plan. He had observed that he was looking at initiating a dialogue with the Opposition Leader on the matter.
He had further said that the leader of such an alliance was not important since it would only matter at a time of a Presidential election and the people would at such a time decide the person for the task.
Fonseka is currently engaged in trying to register his party, the Democratic Party with the Elections Commissioner before forming a broad political alliance. He has charged that some members of the government were obstructing his move to register the party. It is learnt that several local government politicians from the SLFP and UNP have agreed to join the Democratic Party.
