Sri Lanka's leading trade unionist, Joint Secretary of the Free Trade Zones & General Services Employees' Union (FTZGSEU) Anton Marcus was last evening admitted to Nawaloka Hospital with a heart complaint, say union sources.

A member of the National Labour Advisory Council, Mr. Marcus with his 30 year plus activism in the trade union movement was recently elected to the Executive Committee of the global trade union giant "IndustriAll", an amalgamation of three international workers' federations with an estimated membership of 500 million workers, worldwide.

He was a leading figure in the protest campaign against the Employees' Pension Fund Bill, which the government opted to withdraw last year May, in the face of FTZ worker protests.

Mr. Marcus is being kept under medical care in the cardiac intensive care unit, say union sources.
