Workers at the Sevanagala Sugar Company say that 600 metric tons of sugar manufactured in the factory has gone missing. The stock of sugar that has gone missing had been produced between May 19th this year and June 17th. The loss has been estimated at Rs. 54 million.
About 23,500 tons of sugar cane had been used to manufacture during the period between May 19th this year and June 17th.
Approximately 90 kilos of sugar could be manufactured from a ton of sugar cane. Workers say that a minimum of 80-85 kilos of sugar could be manufactured from a ton of sugar cane.
Records at the sugar company indicate that the quantity of sugar manufactured from 23,500 tons of sugar cane has been stated as 1,018 tons of sugar. Therefore 600 metric tons of sugar has gone missing.
Opposition Leader of the Eastern Provincial Council, Daya Gamage who operated the Sevanagala Sugar Company when inquired said that it is clear that corruption had taken place in the company. He has said that a government minister and his supporters were directly responsible for the situation.
