The monies spent by the Mahinda Rajapaksa government to win the Commonwealth Games 2018 bid for Sri Lanka. A sum of Rs. 880 million had been spent to attend and participate in the ceremony that was held to win the bid. An additional Rs. 7.2 million had been spent on upgrading the sports stadiums.
It is revealed that apart from the expenses stated by the Sports Ministry to the media on various questions posed on the expenses to win the Commonwealth Games 2018 bid, the government has spent an additional Rs. 20,000 million without the approval of the Auditor General.
However, the monies have been spent with the consent of the Sports Minister and parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa.
Sri Lanka Cricket Secretary Nishantha Ranataunge has been asked to prepare a report on how the monies had been spent. It is considered one of the key assignments handed to Ranatunge by the Sports Minister and the secretary is now engaged in trying to finalize the report.
