Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa’s personal assistant Lt. Colonel Nivunhella had visited the Wellampitiya Police in civvies on the 10th to save the four murderers in the White Van group that tried to abduct the Kolonnawa Urban Council Chairman, Ravindra Udeshantha.

The four assassins who had tried to murder the Kolonnawa Urban Council Chairman had been captured by the people in the area and handed over to the Wellampitiya Police. They also stood guard around the police station in order to ensure that justice was meted out.

The OIC of the Wellampitiya Police has said the army soldiers could not be released as a result and an argument had ensued between Lt. Colonel Nivunhella and the OIC.

Nivunhella has walked out of the police station after an old boy of Royal College, Colombo had identified him.

DIG for Colombo Anura Senanayake had then gone to the Wellampitiya Police to secure the release of the four army soldiers on a directive by the Defence Secretary.

The Wellampitiya OIC has been transferred with immediate effect to the Field Forces Headquarters due to his failure to abide by the Defence Ministry directive.
