The Galle-Matara express railway line that falls across the main entrance to the Southern expressway has caused many problems. The main entrance from the South into the expressway is situated in the Devata area in Galle.

The Southern expressway is scheduled to be opened on President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s 66th birthday that falls on November 18, 2011.

The Galle-Matara express railway line is situated at the main entry point to the Southern expressway and the Galle-Deniyaya main road is located 1.5 kilometers away from the spot.

Road engineers have warned that putting a railway gate instead of an underground road or a fly over above the railway line would cause severe traffic blocks and could even result in deadly accidents.

A similar situation is expected by the introduction of color lights at junction of the Galle-Deniyaya road on the expressway. According to the engineers, these moves would result in tragic accidents instead of reaping the full benefits the Southern expressway and the express railway line.

The engineers have further stated that the failure on the part of the authorities to follow reports prepared by engineers and carrying out construction work according to political whims have resulted in these problems.
