Threat of the proposal to convert Colombo Municipal Council to a Corporation

  Presently, Urban Development Authority functions under the Ministry of Defence. The Minister in charge of Urban Development has to wait until something comes his way. Although there is a Minister in Charge of Judiciary, Attorney General, Department of Judicial Reforms and Legal Draftsman, function under the President. Action is being taken by the Government to convert the Colombo Municipal Council into a Corporation.

The Government which adopts a policy to suit its political agenda, keeps mum about the media report on this subject.
 
AG to save Minister S.M. Chandrasena by throwing away the case on the Mavilaru financial fraud

Fonseka goes to Appeal Court against first court martial verdict

Former Army Commander and DNA MP Sarath Fonseka on the 23rd filed a writ application before the Appeal Court calling for the annulment of the first court martial verdict against him that was authorized by the President. The first court martial ordered that Fonseka be dishonorably discharged and to strip him off his ranks.

The first court martial found Fonseka guilty on three charges and issued its verdict on August 12.

  Only fifteen of nearly four hundred persons, most of them women, were allowed to witness before Sri Lanka’s Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) in Mullaiththeevu Government Secretariat Monday while the others were driven away, sources in Mullaiththeevu said. The women had come with the hope of getting information about their husbands, sons and daughters who had disappeared without trace after surrendering themselves to Sri Lanka Army (SLA) in the final days of the war on Vanni. Denied of the opportunity to witness before the Commission and from futile attempts in the past they said they had no faith in the Commission calling it a hoax staged by Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa to deceive them and the world.

  Sri Lanka's recently appointed King Percy Mahendra Rajapaksa is attending the UN General Assembly with 130 delegates to represent the tiny island of 19 million inhabitants.

The taxpayers in the island are thought to be paying over 165 million rupees for the jumbo delegation.

  The DNA leaders have discussed the possibility of bringing Anoma Fonseka to parliament in the event Sarath Fonseka loses his parliamentary seat. Lanka News Web learns. If the President approves the recommendation of the second court martial and gives him a prison term, Fonseka may stand to lose his parliamentary seat.

We Need To Fix Immigration Detention Now

  It's time to accept that the current system of detention of asylum-seekers is not working, and that as a compassionate country we need to find a new approach, according to Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young.

Senator Hanson-Young, Greens spokesperson on Immigration, says that the Greens want to bring experts together to rethink Australia's system of immigration detention.
