Threat of the proposal to convert Colombo Municipal Council to a Corporation
Presently, Urban Development Authority functions under the Ministry of Defence. The Minister in charge of Urban Development has to wait until something comes his way. Although there is a Minister in Charge of Judiciary, Attorney General, Department of Judicial Reforms and Legal Draftsman, function under the President. Action is being taken by the Government to convert the Colombo Municipal Council into a Corporation.
The Government which adopts a policy to suit its political agenda, keeps mum about the media report on this subject.
AG to save Minister S.M. Chandrasena by throwing away the case on the Mavilaru financial fraud
The Attorney General's (AG) Department, which under the purview of the President, is trying to throw away the financial fraud case on the Mavilaru funds in order to help the President's close friend deputy minister S.M. Chandrasena, sources from the AG's Department said.

Immediately resolve party crisis - Minister Susil asks UNP MP Sujeewa
Minister Susil Premajayantha had recently asked UNP MP Sujeewa Senasinghe to immediately take steps to resolve the party crisis and strengthen the opposition. He had made this statement at a ceremony held in Kaduwela recently.
The minister had emphasized the importance of strengthening the UNP for the sake of democracy in the country and had said the failure to do so would have an adverse impact on the country's democracy.
Fonseka goes to Appeal Court against first court martial verdict
Former Army Commander and DNA MP Sarath Fonseka on the 23rd filed a writ application before the Appeal Court calling for the annulment of the first court martial verdict against him that was authorized by the President. The first court martial ordered that Fonseka be dishonorably discharged and to strip him off his ranks.
The first court martial found Fonseka guilty on three charges and issued its verdict on August 12.

Orders to re-instate the Dinamina deputy editor who assaulted a journalist after consuming liquor
Dinamina deputy editor Hemantha Depp was appointed to the post due to political influence and was later suspended from duties after he assualted Dinamina journalist Ranjith Padmasiri after consuming liqour during offcie hours. Wijedasa to attend rally against Fonseka's court martial decision in Milano
The UNP has decided to organize a series of protest rallies overseas with the participation of Sri Lankan expatriates against the second court martial decision on former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka and as the first step towards the move, the UNP has decided to send UNP parliamentarian and President's Counsel Wijedasa Rajapakse to participate in the protest scheduled to be held in Milano on the 26th.
Dematagoda Kamal also killed “in a similar manner” after taking into custody
Underworld leader Kamal Dammalarachchi alias Dematagoda Kamal was arrested by a special unit in the Hangurella Police on the 20th and was shot dead yesterday (22) when he allegedly tried to escape from police custody by throwing a bomb when they had gone to uncover a stash of weapons. Attempt to bring Anoma to parliament if Fonseka loses his seat
The DNA leaders have discussed the possibility of bringing Anoma Fonseka to parliament in the event Sarath Fonseka loses his parliamentary seat. Lanka News Web learns. If the President approves the recommendation of the second court martial and gives him a prison term, Fonseka may stand to lose his parliamentary seat.
However, DNA MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake told the media on the 19th that the prison term given by the court martial would not result in Fonseka losing his parliamentary seat.

We Need To Fix Immigration Detention Now
It's time to accept that the current system of detention of asylum-seekers is not working, and that as a compassionate country we need to find a new approach, according to Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young.
Senator Hanson-Young, Greens spokesperson on Immigration, says that the Greens want to bring experts together to rethink Australia's system of immigration detention. Her call comes as the Australian of the Year, Patrick McGorry, has called for a total overhaul of the Government's asylum-seeker policy.
