Security Council discusses about Transparency International

  The Security Council had recently discussed at length about the non government organization (NGO), Transparency International, which heavily criticized the misuse of public resources during the Presidential election by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, government sources said.
 
KP busy campaigning

  Kumaran Pathmanathan alias KP, who has claimed to be the leader of the LTTE and is currently in government custody, is actively engaged in campaigning on behalf of the Rajapaksa administration, reliable sources said.

The main task assigned to KP is to prepare the list of candidates to contest under the governing party from the North and East. Therefore, all UPFA candidates contesting in the North and East have been handpicked by KP.
 
Hashan being followed to find Danuna’s whereabouts

  The CID, which is trying to find the whereabouts of General Sarath Fonseka’s son-in-law Danuna Thilekaratne, is currently keeping a close watch on Hashan Thilekaratne’s movements. Danuna is the son of Hashan’s uncle.

A CID team had visited Hashan’s residence in Piliyandala on February 25th night to search the premises. Hashan’s wife who had returned to the island that day to contest the forthcoming general election from the Colombo District under the Democratic National Alliance (DNA) banner had refused to sign nomination papers after this incident.

Hashan, who was in India for a brief visit, had returned to the country yesterday (28) and is expected to lodge a complaint about the incident with the police headquarters.
 
Maharaja’s Andare helpless in Korea

  An organizer of a protest held on the 21st against the arrest of General Sarath Fonseka in Seoul has prepared a report citing the behavior of several Rajapaksa supporters during the protest.

A man called Andare (Pachcha Andare) had pleaded with the organizers not to hold the protest after an attempt to stop the protest through the Korean police failed. He had pleaded saying, “Give a letter to the Sri Lankan ambassador saying anything you want about the President and do anything against him in that manner, but please don’t hold this protest.” An organizer had then said, “If we wanted to do
 
Major General Amal brought down from Eritrea to question about Lasantha’s assassination

  Major General Amal Karunasekera, who is currently assigned to the Sri Lankan embassy in Eritrea, has been recalled to the country to question about The Sunday Leader Editor Lasantha Wickrematunge’s assassination.

The Major General was earlier the Director of Military Intelligence and the CID has asked him not to leave the country the questioning is concluded.

The police have reportedly made several leads while investigating in to details of mobile phones of several suspects in Lasantha’s assassination.
 
Mervyn supports UNP candidate after attacking MEP candidate

  Minister Mervyn Silva who ordered an attack on the office of MEP candidate from the UPFA at the general election for the Gampaha District and Western Provincial Councilor Sisira Jayakody on the 27th night, yesterday extended his support to the UNP Kelaniya electoral organizer after visiting him at his residence.

The attack on Sisira Jayakody’s office had been initiated by one of Mervyn’s supporters and Pradeshiya Sabha memebr called Madawala.

Sisira complained to the police that thugs had destroyed cut outs of himself and the President and had caused much damage to his office premises.
 
Protest in Australia by CFDISL

  Supporters of the Campaign for Democracy in Sri Lanka (Australia) conducted a well-organised demonstration outside the SL High Commission in Canberra today Friday the 26th.

They demanded full democratic rights for Sri Lanka such as are enjoyed by the people of most other countries including Australia. Therefore Gen. Sarath Fonseka must be released from custody where he still being incarcerated without any formal charges having been laid against him.

 
Namal and Basil launch operation to get Wimal first in Colombo list

  Namal Rajapaksa and Basil Rajapaksa have launched an operation to get NFF Leader Wimal Weerawansa the number one slot in the Colombo District preferential votes list, sources from Temple Trees said.

The operation was planned after a survey conducted by an advertising agency revealed that Duminda Silva was going to hold the top slot in the preferential votes list.
 
Complaints on 17 missing persons

  The Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission says that it has received 17 complaints about missing persons within a period of one month and three weeks between January this year and February 23.

Of the complaints eights had been received during the month of January and the rest in three weeks of February.

An official at the commission said that most of the complaints were from the North and East and that some of the missing persons may have been found in relative’s houses.
 
306 government schools shut down

  The latest survey conducted by the Census and Statistics Department for the Education Ministry has revealed that 306 government schools have closed down while six private schools and six pirivenas have been newly opened between 2008 and January 2010.

The survey has revealed that 79,464 students have left school while there has been an increase in the number of private school students by 584 and 2,033 in pirivenas.

  Sri Lankan cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya has been criticised for refusing to quit the sport as he enters politics.

The veteran of the national team has said he will run in April's election on the governing coalition ticket of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Jayasuriya said he would continue to play one-day internationals but not Test cricket.

Critics say those not selected for the team might feel they have to support the government to win a place.

Four Army officers on a hunger strike

  Four Army officers currently under TID custody after being taken over for supporting General Sarath Fonske at the Presidential election have launched a hunger strike last Wednesday.

Major Nishantha Mallikarachchi, Major Vijitha Kodippili, Major Susantha Attanayake and Lieutenant Samarakoon are the army officers who are engaged in the strike.
 
Champika-Dinesh in alliance to score more preferential votes against Wimal

  A battle for the votes of the Sinhala Buddhist extremists in the Colombo District has intensified among UPFA candidates Champika Ranawaka, Dinesh Gunawardena and Wimal Weerawansa. In the face of the challenge posed by Wimal Weerawansa, Champika Ranawaka and Dinesh Gunawardena have decided to forge an alliance to campaign for votes in the District.

Dinesh has already commenced a joint propaganda campaign with Champika to gain the preferential votes and is to launch a separate joint campaign with Wimal as well.
 
SriLankan employees banned from using google and gmail

  SriLankan Airlines employees have been barred from accessing their personal e-mails and the google search engine on their office computers, sources from the company said.

Also, security cameras have been fixed on all entrances and access routes of the SriLankan Airlines office at the Katunayake Airport.
 
Operation launched for Rajapaksas to get highest preferential votes and percentage

  The Presidential Secretariat has launched a special operation to ensure that Basil Rajapaksa get the highest number of preferential votes and Namal Rajapaksa the highest preferential vote percentage.

In line with the operation, the Presidential Secretariat has asked all UPFA candidates from the Hambantota and Gampaha Districts to help promote the images of Namal and Basil Rajapaksa. The candidates have also bee asked to display separate placards of the two Rajapaksas along with that of the respective candidates in the two districts.
 
Basil behind Etisalat operation

  The key figure behind the take over of the Tigo telecommunications company by Etisalat from the United Arab Emirates is Basil Rajapaksa, it is learnt.

Etisalat was officially launched in Sri Lanka on the 25th.

Although former Director General of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission, Priyantha Kariyapperuma objected to Etisalat, the deal had been finalized soon after the new director general, Anusha Pelpita took over the Commission.

In order to get the necessary approval for the company to launch in Sri Lanka, Etisalat it is learnt had contributed large sums of money to the President’s and Basil’s election campaigns.

Don’t give publicity to ministers

  A journalist affiliated to a popular weekly newspaper told Lanka News Web that Presidential Media Unit Director General Mahinda Illeperuma had informed the editor of his newspaper on Thursday (25) morning that publicity should not be given to any news item related to government ministers without the knowledge of the Presidential Secretariat and that it was a Presidential directive.
 
Jackson’s name slashed, Malini’s name added to UPFA national list

  The name of Jackson Anthony, who played a key role in President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s election campaign, has been slashed and the name of celluloid queen, Malini Fonseka has been included in the UPFA national list, SLFP sources said. Although Basil Rajapaksa had included Anthony’s name in the Gampaha District nominations list, his name had to be slashed following objections raised by Felix Perera.

Malini Fonseka also played a role in the President’s election campaign and is also one of his close friends.
 
No policy statement from the UPFA this time

  SLFP Secretary General Maithripala Sirisena says that a separate policy statement would not be launched by the governing party for the general election as the next parliament would work according to the second phase of the Mahinda Chinthana launched by the president during the Presidential election.

He made the statement after handing in nominations of the governing UPFA for the Polonnaruwa District as the UPFA district leader.
