  Gotabhaya agrees to withdraw cases against The Sunday Leader

  A senior official at the Justice Ministry told Lanka News Web that the President has decided to withdraw all the cases filed by Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa against The Sunday leader newspaper.

A defamation case filed against The Sunday Leader newspaper by Gotabhaya Rajapaksa is still being heard at the Mt. Lavinia Court.

However, the official said the President and the Defence Secretary were happy with the lead story carried in the newspaper last week, which was unfavorable for General Sarath Fonseka.

  Uncle Basil Rajapaksa was known as “Mr. 10 percent,” at one time and now nephew Namal Rajapaksa is being known as “Master 10 percent.”

Mangala Samaraweera said that the effort to bring back the President in to power by spending a massive amount of commission money claiming to ensure a better tomorrow for the youth, was actually a move to benefit the Rajapaksa family’s future.

SLFP (M) Wing Leader, Mangala Samaraweera made this comment at a press conference on the 16th. He said the Rajapaksa family was trying hard to return to power as they were well aware of the benefits of extorting public properties and taking commissions.

However, Samaraweera expressed confidence that the people would teach the Rajapaksas a lesson by voting against them at the election and ending their power base.

  UPFA General Secretary, Minister Susil Premajayantha has told Minister Piyasiri Wijenayake in the nominations room that President Mahinda Rajapaksa was displeased as he did not receive a warm welcome when he entered the nominations room.

Nominations were accepted from 9 a.m. on Thursday and the President arrived at the Department around 10.25 a.m. Although an official had gestured asking people in the room to stand and greet the President when he walked in, except for Sri Lanka Progressive Front Secretary Rohan Perera and the party’s Presidential candidate, Nelson Perera, no one else stood to greet the President.
  Elections Commissioner openly criticizes Rupavahini’s bias reporting

  The Sri Lanka Rupavahini, which was permitted to provide live coverage of the handing in of nominations at the Elections Department, was criticized by the Elections Commissioner for its bias reporting. The Elections Commissioner firmly advised Additional Director General of the Rupavahini, Devapriya Abeywsinghe to rectify the situation and the incident was also telecast live on TV.

The Elections Commissioner summoned the Additional Director General and warned him after several Presidential candidates complained about the bias reporting of the event by Rupavahini, which carried out the programme in a manner that gave prominence only to the President.
  SB unhappy after not receiving a post

  Former UNP National Organizer S.B. Dissanayake it is learnt is unhappy since he has not received any post and been assigned any responsibilities even 10 days after crossing over to the government.

Sources from the SLFP headquarters said that several senior SLFPers were displeased with SB’s decision to rejoin the SLFP on the 7th after holding a special media briefing soon after resigning from all posts he held in the UNP and the Central Provincial Council.

However, Johnston Fernando and Indika Bandaranayake who joined the government on the 16th after holding a special press briefing were given ministerial portfolios.
  “Sri Lankan Airlines” Pay Bonuses only to the Local Staff

  Sri Lankan Airlines which has already recorded a massive loss running over Rupees Nine Billion (Rs.9,000,000,000.00) has announced that the local staff of the ailing airline will pay a month’s salary as the bonus for the New Year. However, the Sri Lankan citizens who are working in other countries as the staff of the airline are not going to get the bonuses as the payment is made only to the staff resident in Sri Lanka.
  Arjuna joins to support the General

  UPFA parliamentarian Arjuna Ranatunga expressed solidarity to common candidate General Sarath Fonskea and joined his campaign on the 17th evening.

After personally expressing his support to the General, Arjuna addressed the media. He said, “I have felt for some time that there needs to be a change in the country. I have been a parliamentarian and a deputy minister for the past eight years. I came forward to develop cricket and sports. I spoke of the corruption that has entered in to the sports sector.
  Defence Secretary makes request from members of Gemunu Regiment

  Officers of the Gemunu Regiment have been informed by retired Majors General Laloin Fernando and K.B. Egodawela to vote for President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the Presidential election or to boycott the elections without casting their votes for General Sarath Fonseka.

This announcement had been made to the officers after they were asked to attend a meeting to make an important announcement soon after the conclusion of a Ranaviru felicitation ceremony held at the Kuruvita Camp in Ratnapura.

The majors general have said that the request was to be followed not only by the Army officers, but by their families as well.

  UNP Kurunegala District parliamentarian Johnston Fernando agitated along with a group of party members to oust the party leadership and following its failure he objected to the candidature of General Sarath Fonseka as the opposition common candidate.

The state media gave him much publicity and Basil Rajapaksa ensured that Fernando received the necessary state patronage and funding for his work.
  EC adopts proposal to suspend GSP plus to Lanka

  The European Commission (EC) has adopted a proposal to temporarily suspend the GSP plus trade concession scheme to Sri Lanka. EU Member States will now have two months in which to decide on it, the EU website, in a press release, said adding that Sri Lanka is in breach of its GSP plus commitments.

  Lake House Chairman Bandula Padmakaumara it is learnt has been assured the permanent post as Chairman of the state print media institution as long as President Mahinda Rajapaksa remained in office, by the President’s brother Basil Rajapaksa. Padmakumara acted as the broker in the sale of Swarnavahini to Basil and the assurance given to him is an additional incentive apart from the house he received as commission for arranging the sale.

S.B. Dissanayake’s wife, Thamara Dissanayake had informed the President of the live interview of Susanthika on TNL TV. Thamara has openly objected to the once close friendship between Susnthika and SB.

  Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama had requested Presidential Secretary Lalith Weeartunge on Monday (14) to inform the President the campaign carried out by the government that General Sarath Fonseka betrayed war secrets was not favorable for the administration among the international community due to the impression created that there have been acts committed, which need to be kept a secret by the country. The Foreign Minister had requested that the campaign be stopped.

The Foreign Secretary had further stated that the government by carrying out such a campaign without denying the General’s comments would stand to confirm the allegations leveled against the country by the international community about war crimes committed during the war with the LTTE.
