Majority of the northern people reject local government polls

  Only 22,280 out of the registered number of voters amounting to 100,417 in Jaffna had cast their votes at the local government elections on the 8th. Of those who had cast their votes, 1,358 had simply struck off their ballot papers.

Meanwhile, at the Vavuniya local government elections, of the 24,626 registered voters, only 12,850 had cast their votes. About 558 voters had struck off their ballot papers.

  Serious doubts have been cast on KP’s arrest locally and internationally. The question is whether the new Leader of the LTTE and its international wing head, Kumaran Pathmanathan alias KP was arrested by the international security units and handed over to Sri Lankan authorities or whether he willingly surrendered following an agreement reached with the Sri Lankan authorities.

Some of the main reasons that have raised suspicion over the arrest are the fact that neither the Thai nor Malaysian authorities have confirmed arresting KP while the government continues to state that he was arrested following tip offs received by LTTE members and that the arrest happened two days prior to the Uva Provincial Council election and the Jaffna and Vavuniya local government elections.

Two months after the end of the fighting, the Sri Lankan authorities are still not addressing properly the needs of the newly displaced. The camps are overcrowded and unsanitary.

The journalist who made the call to the embassy has no standing in the media field as well as within his own family circle. When inquired about the matter from Public Services Commission Secretary Lakshmi Gunawardena, she said that while 140 employees were attached to the Public Services Commission, it has not made any decision with regard to the public service since the end of its period on April 8. It is learnt that two persons from Tekkawatte, Vavuniya act as intermediaries in the transactions. Their role is said to be the collection of cash from relatives of the IDPs and hand it over to the state intelligence service (SIS) and army officers and to coordinate the release mechanism.

While many IDPs have always already made a get away from the camps through these means, the intelligence officers have begun to consider this situation to be a jackpot.

Students’ union president who protested against errors in test papers arrested

  Reporters Without Borders is outraged by the Sri Lanka government’s decision on 3 August not to allow journalists into the northern cities of Vavuniya and Jaffna to cover the first local elections to be held since the defeat of the Tamil Tiger rebels earlier this year. All outsiders are being denied entry for “security” reasons.

“It is unacceptable that the government should impose such a ban on nothing more than the vaguest security grounds,” Reporters Without Borders said. “As well as violating the population’s fundamental rights by preventing them from circulating freely, this measure dashes any hope of a transparent election.”

Orders issued to give prominence to Basil’s speeches

Prachanda slams India, Lanka for fight against rebels

  The Communist Party of Maoists-Nepal (CPN-M) on Sunday criticised the governments of India and Sri Lanka for their “oppressive” campaigns against rebels in the two countries.   Reliable sources told Lanka News Web that foreign dignitaries and foreign media are being taken to the Zero Camp in the Menik Farm IDP camp in order to show the plight of the displaced persons to the international community.

Civilians who arrived in government controlled areas during the latter half of 2008 and early 2009 are being housed at the Zero Camp and the camp is said to have better facilities than the other camps housing civilians believed to be LTTE supporters.
 
Mud slinging campaign to prevent Sarath Silva from entering politics

  A senior official at the Justice Ministry told Lanka News Web that a massive state sponsored mud-slinging campaign has been launched against former Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva and his associates due to the fear harbored by the Rajapakses that he would contest as the common candidate of the opposition at the next presidential election.

As part of the campaign leaflets carrying stories against Silva and his close associate, former Judicial Services Commission Secretary, Chandra Jayathileka are being sold at the Aluthkade court premises.
 
General Sarath Fonseka plans to leave the country

  Former Army Chief General Sarath Fonseka is planning on migrating to the US due to the deep disappointment in the manner in which he is being treated by the Rajapakses, a close confidant of Fonseka told Lanka News Web.

Rajapakses who feared the massive recognition received by Fonseka following the military victory against the LTTE, removed him from the post as Army Chief and confined him in the Chief of Defence Staff position after curtailing his security.

Now comes “Sri Lanka facing an Aid Shortfall” from the mouth of the Presidential sibling, Gotabhaya Rajapakse, who gave an interview to the BBC. He has expected much more than what had been promised from the UN, the United States, which incidentally is his homeland and also from Japan according to the said interview. As per his comments, the funds are needed for facilities of nearly 300,000 Internally Displaced People or IDPs as the Government call them. To many others these are innocent Tamil people who are herded into internment camps managed by the military and surrounded by barbed wire fences, undergoing untold hardships and sufferings.

  Sri Lanka's new Minister of Tourism, Nandana Gunathilaka has decided to give up the recently launched tagline "Sri Lanka; Small Miracle."

The Minister has made the President aware that the use of the word "small" is not suitable for a great nation like Sri Lanka. However, Gunathilaka's clan earlier opposed power sharing on the basis that Sri Lanka is a small island.

  In India, during the SL war “The Hindu” news paper was very vocal against the LTTE and was providing plenty of coverage for the official version of the war that was waged. It was a period the emotions were charged and also divided and thus had less time for monitoring the role of media behaviour. Yet there was anxiety and concern in many circles over how the correspondent of “The Hindu” in Colombo filed news stories and of the editorial responsibility of the news paper. We now take this opportunity of an official visit by a US official to SL to project how “The Hindu” editorial consciously denies the public, the right for independent and unbiased information and adds to the misery of the displaced lives behind barbed wire.

  The Government Agent of Killinochchi, Nagalinkam Vethanayagan is being interrogated by a special unit of the Police.

Police spokesman Ranjith Gunasekara confirmed that the top civil servant is in custody but refused to give details of any charges.

The Police spokesman told the media that the GA was arrested under Prevention of Terrorism Act after a resident living in an IDP camp passed on information to the Police.

  The relatives of the IDP’s in Vauniya and Jaffna have been told that if they want to get their relatives out of the camps that they should vote for the UPFA candidates at the local polls.

According to media reports an application form is being circulated in Jaffna requesting details of relatives living in IDP camps.

The local UPFA politicians have assured residents in Jaffna that if they are voted in that they would secure early release of relatives.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) is trying to regroup following its military defeat by the Sri Lankan army in May 2009. Though routed militarily, the LTTE claims its international network remains intact. Selvarasa Pathmanathan, a former arms procurer for the LTTE chief, operating from an undisclosed location, has vowed to take forward the struggle for Eelam through democratic methods. By roping in various legal experts, the LTTE has formed a team under US-based Tamil legal adviser Visuvanathan Rudrakumaran to work on the formation of a provisional Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE). Rudrakumaran, the son of former Jaffna Mayor Viswanathan, has been closely involved with the LTTE and has represented the outfit in several peace talks with the Government of Sri Lanka. In an exclusive interview to TEHELKA, Rudrakumaran shared his thoughts on the transnational government that the LTTE is now trying to establish. Excerpts:

  Press Trust of India reported that the former Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga had strongly favored reservation for women in Sri Lanka's Parliament.

Speaking on women’s vote in politics in India she had said “Sri Lanka is one of the countries in the whole world that has the lowest representation in Parliament, we have only about 13 per cent representation and is not satisfactory".

Actually, the women’s representation in the cabinet is less than 2%.
