Resettlement in the North
A case of falling from the frying to the fire

2011-08-31
The persons resettled in Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu Districts are faced with severe hardships due to the lack of basic facilities in the areas they have been resettled. Rations provided for people in Sugandipuram, Devipuram, Vallipuram, Udayarkatti, Dharmapuram and Vishvamadu areas have been slashed and they also face difficulties in finding drinking water for consumption.

They have been severely affected by the government’s failure to renovate the irrigation systems in the area for them to commence farming, which is the livelihood of many in the area. The government has also not provided them with roofing sheets for houses and any help to commence their livelihoods.
A proper hospital system has also not been out in place in these areas to provide proper health facilities to the people. Even the only hospital in Mullaitivu does not have a government medical officer. The Puthukuduirippu, Kaiveli hospital is being managed by the UN. The hospital also lacks certain medical facilities.
