Nation Editor pleads for a diplomatic position

2011-07-01
Editor of the Nation newspaper Gamini Abeywardane has implored President Mahinda Rajapaksa to grant him a diplomatic posting as soon as possible.

Lanka News Web learns that Abeywardane who met the President at Temple Trees this week has told Rajapaksa that he would like to be granted an ambassadorial position at one of Sri Lanka’s overseas missions.

According to sources present at the meeting, Abeywardane had made a case for himself by claiming that he had contributed towards ensuring the security of the Rajapaksa regime in his time as editor by preventing the Nation paper from publishing anti-government articles despite immense pressure from his staff.
The editor told President Rajapaksa that he has had to maintain a very firm stance about refusing to even adopt a moderate position in the newspaper because it might cause problems for the government. Abeywardane told the President that he has had to sacrifice a great deal of popularity with his editorial staff in order to fulfil these requirements on behalf of the government.

The President had promised to look into Abeywardane’s request but sources told LNW that they were shocked at the level of supplication the editor had stooped to in order to convince the President that he was deserving of a diplomatic posting.

Sources close to the President reveal that it is likely Abeywardane will be granted his wish although he is unlikely to be given an ambassadorial rank.
