| The editor told President Rajapaksa that he has had to maintain a very firm stance about refusing to even adopt a moderate position in the newspaper because it might cause problems for the government. Abeywardane told the President that he has had to sacrifice a great deal of popularity with his editorial staff in order to fulfil these requirements on behalf of the government.
The President had promised to look into Abeywardane’s request but sources told LNW that they were shocked at the level of supplication the editor had stooped to in order to convince the President that he was deserving of a diplomatic posting.
Sources close to the President reveal that it is likely Abeywardane will be granted his wish although he is unlikely to be given an ambassadorial rank. |
