Fishermen using fishing nets are faced with difficulties due to the building of a Navy camp on the Muttuvarama island in Kalpitiya.
Head of the fishermen's society Kenedy Jayamanne said that the Navy was building a camp in the area where the fishermen have their vadiya and that he had already complained to the fisheries inspector in the area.
Navy Spokesperson Commander Kosala Kurukulasuriya said that the camp was being set up following a Defence Ministry directive and that the construction work is being carried out in a state land. The reason for the setting up of the camp is to crack down on drug peddling and human smuggling taking place in the area.
