Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has rejected a request made by Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda, asking that he be provided with VIP security in Japan. Where he has assumed duties as the Sri Lankan ambassador and to assign his current security personnel to Japan.
The Defence Secretary had said that he could not assign security personnel with Defence Ministry allocations since there was no LTTE threat in Japan.
A request made by Karannagoda from the External Affairs Ministry to assign his security personnel to the Sri Lankan embassy in Japan has also been turned down. The External Affairs Ministry Secretary had said the Ministry did not have the financial allocations to pay the security personnel.
An official from the External Affairs Ministry told us that it was not proper to make a spectacle of oneself with a large security contingent in Japan, when the country is trying to recover from a tsunami devastation.
