Persons in displaced camps may not get voting rights-PAFFREL
2011-02-13
Executive Director of PAFFREL, Rohana Hettiarachchi has said the Elections Commissioner did not have a mandate to take any action with regard to the persons in displaced camps.
The powers vested in the Elections Commissioner under the local government elections act does not include powers to the Commissioner to ensure voting rights to the displaces persons.
Therefore, the PAFFREL organization says the political parties should take some join action to ensure the displaced persons get their voting rights.
There are currently over 7,000 persons in displaced camps and Arachnophobia says they should be given their voting rights to shoos the local government members to their areas.
