Samurdhi officer who was tied to a tree gets death threats

2010-08-05
Samurdhi officer Mohomad Ishad, who was tied to a tree at the Kelaniya Pradeshiya Sabha office, is being threatened by Deputy Minister Mervyn Silva’s thugs, reliable sources told Lanka News Web.

Two coordinating secretaries of the Minister, Ranjan and Saman, had visited Ishad’s residence on Wednesday (4) morning and threatened him and his family before getting him to sign a letter.

The letter stated that he had tied himself to the tree voluntarily and that the minister had come and untied him. The officers had also threatened the Samurdhi officer and his family that they would be killed if information about the incident was told to any one.
The Opposition Leader criticized the government in parliament on the 4th over the tying up of a Samurdhi officer to a tree. Mervyn in response said he had not punished any one. He said the Samurdhi officer had sent a letter to him saying he had voluntarily come forward to punish himself and that he had merely untied a man who was tied to a tree.

The minister then asked why everyone was affected by it, if the relevant parties were not affected by it. He also pointed out that kings used to torture and kill culprits in the past.
