Socialist People’s Front in an ideology battle on Executive Prime Ministerial post

2010-08-02
Several schools of though have emerged in the Socialist People’s Front over the abolishing of the Executive Presidency and appointment of an Executive Prime Ministerial post. The Socialist People’s Front is a coalition formed by the Lanka Sama Samaja Party, Sri Lanka Communist Party, Democratic Left Alliance, Sri Lanka Mahajana Party and Desha Vimukthi Janatha Party.

When inquired from the Secretary of the Democratic Left Alliance, parliamentarian Vasudeva Nanayakkara said that although there were various ideologies within the coalition about the Executive Prime Ministerial post,
his personal view was that a person should be elected to the post by the people through a separate election.

Secretary of the Socialist People’s Front and head of the Sri Lanka Communist Party, Raja Collure said that a Prime Minister should be elected by parliament in a manner similar to the Westminster system proposed by the All Party Representative Committee.

Politburo member of the Lanka Sama Samaja Party, Lal Wijenayake said that appointing an Executive Prime Minister in place of an Executive President would be like falling from the frying pan to the fire.
