WHAT'S HOT IN SRI LANKA

A situation similar to Burma would happen in Sri Lanka!
President had warned the Malwatte Chief Priest

2010-02-17
Reliable sources said President Mahinda Rajapaksa had called the Chief Priest of the Malwatte Chapter yesterday (16) morning and warned that a situation similar to Burma would take place in Sri Lanka and the Buddhist monks would be in great danger if the Sangha Convention was held.

The President had said that he had received information from security units of a large number of Buddhist monks who are prepared to forcibly enter the Sangha Convention and create a disturbance. He had also advised the Mahanayake Thero to ensure that a situation similar to what happened in Burma does not
  happen in Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, a large number of Buddhist monks had also placed much pressure on the Mahanayakes against the Sangha Convention on behalf of the President. As Media Minister, the President also launched a massive media campaign against the Sangha Convention.

In this backdrop, the Mahanayakes issued a special statement informing the indefinite postponement of the Sangha Convention in order to protect the Buddhist monks, the general public and the honor of the Dalada Maligawa.

However, the Mahanayakes have been careful not to question the threat that could endanger the lives of the Maha Sangha and the Buddhist public who would participate at the Sangha Convention given that the LTTE terrorism has been defeated in the country.
