Sangha Convention postponed amidst government pressure

2010-02-17
The Sangha Convention that was scheduled to be held on the 18th at the Maha Maluwa in Kandy to address the present chaotic situation in the country and restore democracy and good governance has been postponed indefinitely following pressure from the government.

A massive campaign was launched under the President to prevent the Sangha Convention from being held on the scheduled date. The campaign had even caused a division among the Maha Sngha.

However, the statement issued under the signatures of the Chief Priests of the Asgiri and Malwatu Chapters and the Amarapura and Ramanna nikayas states:
  To the revered Maha Sangha

It is the Maha Sangha that has been providing the rulers of the country and general public with the necessary advice and guidance since time immemorial. In line with this role played by the Maha Sangha, we decided to hold a Sangha Convention of the three nikayas at the Maha Maluwa in Kandy on the 18th of February 2010 in order to create peaceful and good governance in the country.

However, it is now being informed to the Maha Sangha of the three nikayas that the Sangha Convention has been postponed indefinitely after considering the prevalent conditions in the country and the need to protect the members of the Maha Sangha, the general public and the honor of the Dalada Maligawa.”
