Opposition and UNF Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe making a special press statement today (15) said the UNF denied the baseless and false allegation leveled against General Sarath Fonseka and the JVP of being involved in a coup to topple the government.
He further said, “We always tried to assume power with the people’s will through a free and fair election. We were never prepared to assume power through blood shed and conspiracies.
“General Sarath Fonseka and many of his supporters have been arrested on this false and baseless allegation. However, it should be noted |

that these people have not been officially charged with anything yet. The government is trying to use the word “conspiracy” as a tool to arrest General Fonseka and others to keep them away from politics. We vehemently condemn this action and call on the government to stop slinging mud by making false and baseless allegations.
“I also deny the story circulated by Minister Dullas Alahapperuma that I was being held back at the Cinnamon Lakeside Hotel on the night of the Presidential election for over an hour until the new cabinet was being decided.
“I went to the Cinnamon Lake Hotel from my residence the morning after the Presidential election to discuss the problem faced by General Fonseka. Afterwards, I returned to my office.
“Therefore, we call on the government to stop making these false and baseless allegations and to release General Fonseka and his supporters.” |
