WHAT'S HOT IN SRI LANKA

Elle tournament in Paris ends in a fracas

Lanka News Web learns that the Elle tournament organized by the SLFP branch in Paris to promote national peace had ended in a fracas.

Officials from the Sri Lankan embassy in France have also attended the tournament and as soon as an argument between a team that participated at the event and the organizers turned into a brawl, the embassy officials have immediately moved away from the venue in their vehicles.

Interestingly, none of the officials from the Sri Lankan embassy in France attended the religious event held to mark the 20th anniversary of the International Buddhist Center in Paris. The religious events had been organized under the guidance of Ven. Paravahera Chandraratne Thero.
However, the attendance of many senior embassy officials at the Elle tournament organized by the SLFP Maithri faction had been a shock to many Sri Lankans in Paris.

The President of the SLFP Maithri faction in Paris has received several warnings from the French Police for threatening a journalist and also the President of the UNP branch in Paris. During a recent visit to Sri Lanka, this individual had met with the President and posed for several photographs with him claiming the SLFP branch in Paris was working for the benefit of the government. The President had asked him to bring together all Sri Lankan communities living in Paris to create national harmony.

The irony however is that the event to build national harmony among the Sri Lanka communities concluded with a brawl between the organizers and a team of Tamil youths.

Sri Lankans living in Paris say that apart from getting his photographs with the President published in newspapers, the main organizer is not keen on organizing any events to promote national harmony.
