  Presidential pardon for journalist Tissainayagam

2009-09-01 | 3.00 PM
Foreign Ministry sources said that Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama has requested the President to grant a Presidential pardon to journalist J.S. Tissainayagam, who has been sentenced to 20 years rigorous imprisonment.

Many foreign diplomats and international organizations have called the Foreign Minister and requested the government to look at the matter in a humane perspective, as the sentence of rigorous imprisonment passed on Tissainayagam yesterday (31) was unjust. Also, the Presidential Secretariat and the Foreign Ministry had received many fax messages objecting to the court verdict delivered on the Tissainayagam case.
The President who is currently in Libya to attend the 40th independence celebrations of the country has had a lengthy discussion with the Foreign Minister on the objections raised by the international community with regard to the Tissainayagam case.

The Foreign Minister has requested the President to consider granting Tissainayagam a Presidential pardon given that international organizations have justified such a move. He has also said that such a move would help the President receive the support of the Tamil community at the next Presidential election.
