JVP Propaganda Secretary Vijitha Herath said, “We will begin a new political journey that would take the country’s politics into a new direction from the South. We will fire the first salvo in bringing about a change in national politics together with the people from south at the forthcoming Southern Provincial Council election. The people in the south are ready for it. The country is need of a new direction. Therefore our theme will be ‘Let’s take the country in a new direction from the South.’ The JVP is ready for the challenge of taking the country in a new direction.”

The Propaganda Secretary made this statement at a press conference held at the party headquarters yesterday (30).
JVP politburo member, parliamentarian Chandrasena Wijesinghe, Southern Province chief ministerial candidate and Matara District Leader Sisira Kumara, Galle District Leader Nalin Hewage and Hambantota District Leader Sisira Wahalathanthri participated in the press conference.

The party’s Propaganda Secretary also stated, “The vehicle called Provincial Councils has been traveling the roads for the past 21 years. It is now dilapidated and cannot be put back on the roads. If the government is trying to put this vehicle back on the road and to implement the 13th amendment, the JVP is ready to come forward to protect the country’s unitary state.

“The government is speaking highly of the victories gained at other provincial council elections. They say there is no battle in the South. However, on the first day itself they attacked JVP members in an inhuman manner in Tissamaharama. If there is no competition, then why holding election by suppressing democracy?

“The 17th amendment has not been implemented yet. We challenge the government to hold elections after appointing the independent police and elections commissions. The government is also misleading the people in the South. They have started to give land deeds to the people who were displaced by the tsunami that were supposed to have been given earlier.

“The JVP has always brought victory to the people when ever it was strong. We defeated orders and acts that were unfavorable to the people. Rs. 90 million is pent to maintain the Southern Province Governor and the ministers. Yet, only Rs. 75 million is allocated to uplift the provincial health sector. This situation has to be changed and the JVP is working with the people in the South to bring about his change.”
Parliamentarian Chnadrasena Wijesinghe addressing the media briefing said, “The government that speaks of ‘mathata thittha’ is now unable to conduct the Southern Provincial Council election without arrack, kasippu and ganja. There is no discipline. It is only the JVP that can carry out disciplined politics without any arrack, kasippu and ganja.

“Today the police is carrying out the work of the court and even punishments are carried out by the police. The following day they are found dead on the roads. The country needs democracy.

“There is rampant fraud and corruption, but the country wants development. Corruption therefore has to be
wiped out from the political leaderships as well. It is only the JVP that has provided a living example of being against fraud and corruption.

“The country is now looking for economic prosperity, national peace and democracy. But the government is not ready to provide it. There has to be new political culture and we will fire the first salvo from the South.

“There is an old adage that says that the woodpecker keeps pecking on trees until it comes across a plantain tree when its beak gets entangled in it. In a similar manner, the government will also get entangled at the Southern elections. The people in the south will not allow the government to further mislead the country.”

JVP’s Chief Ministerial candidate at the Southern Provincial Council election, Sisira Kumara said, “The government and the UNP worked together in fraudulent, corrupt and other actions against people at the provincial council. There are 41 council members representing the government and the UNP including the chief minister. It is like Ali Baba and the 40 thieves. Now the man who swallowed millions through Mihin Lanka has also been brought in. Also, a pretty face that has no idea about politics has also been brought in.”

Galle District Leader Nalin Hewage told the media, “The governing party members in the council after returning to the country from an educational tour started to run horse drawn carriages from the Galle Fort to the Galle city. Two horses were brought spending Rs. 7 lakhs. They tried to tie the horses to bullock carts. Finally, the horses got agitated and attacked and killed a man.

“There is a shortage of 571 aesthetic teachers in the Southern Province. There are aesthetic graduates in Colombo fasting and asking for appointments. There is a shortage of 101 Tamil language teachers.

“A family can be given only a maximum of Rs. 20,000 as aid to build a house. However, there are councilors who have taken out Rs. 50,000 to build houses under their wives names. There are also members who have stolen vehicles belonging to the Council.”

Hambantota District Leader Sisira Wahalathanthri said, “The JVP got its first parliamentary seat from the Hambantota District. The JVP received its first local government body, the Tissamaharama Pradeshiya Sabha, in 2002. At the second election, the people in Tissa gave the JVP one seat and more votes. The JVP also controls the Hungama and Walasmulla Cooperative Societies. We have also become the opposition in three pradehsiya sabhas and at a similar position to the opposition in three other pradeshiya sabhas. The JVP will emerge victorious from the Hambantota District this time as well.”
