President slashes Susil’s powers by appointing executive advisor |

An executive advisor has been appointed on a Presidential directive to the Education Ministry, who has the mandate to give orders to the Minisry Secretary and other officials, slashing Edcuation Minister Susil Premajayantha’s powers.
Dr. Upali M. Sedara has been appointed as the Executive Director to the Edcuation Minister with effect from August 21, 2009.
There was much talk during the last few days about possible changes being made to portoflios held by several ministers including Susil Premajayantha. The new appointement has been made min this backdrop. It is also the first time that an advisor has been appointed to the Education Ministry with executive powers. |

The executive advisor is paid a salary of US$ 900 (approximately Rs. 100,000) and is provided with a vehicle and other facilities.
Dr. Upali M. Sedara has said that he was appointed to the post on August 20, 2009 following a proposal made by a cabinet sub committee.
Dr. Sedara said that he is entitled to the powers vested with his post and expressed his hopes on bringing about a development in the quality of education by covering all aspects in the sector. He said the Ministry Secretary would be made aware of all decisions taken by him in that aspect.
Minister Susil Premajayantha referring to the new appointment said the salary of the appointee was met under an Education Ministry project. |
