The new Army Chief has taken steps to slash the security of five journalists who were under threat from former Navy Chief Wasantha Karannagoda for supporting former Army Chief General Sarath Fonseka.

The personal security officer of the former Navy Chief, Lieutenant Commander Sampath Munasinghe alias Navy Sampath, earlier gave a statement to the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) saying that he was ordered by his chief to kill five journalists who had written in support of Fonseka during the war.

The five journalists under threat, Prasanna Fonseka of the Siyatha newspaper, Tissa Ravindra from the Rivira newspaper, Ruwan Weerakoon from the Bottomline
newspaper, Amal Samantha from Rupavihini and Mihiri Fonseka from the Lakbima newspaper, were provided with a special security contingent comprising five army personnel.

The new Army Chief following orders of the Defence Secretary had removed the security provided to the journalists without any prior inquiries from them.
