Five workers attached to the Education Department Cooperative Society (EDCS) launched a fast on the 28th against the JVP’s teacher trade union head and EDCS President, Mahinda Jayasinghe for the alleged misappropriation of finances and the malicious transfer of employees.
Five employees including a female employee are engaged in the fast that has been launched outside the head office of the EDCS that handles loans for teachers.
The employees engaged in the fast said that there has been a massive financial fraud that has taken place when acquiring buildings and other material for two regional offices in Kurunegala and Ratnapura, apart from the head office in Colombo, without following the legally |

stipulated procedures. Also, they say that the transfer of employees has been made without the approval of the Cooperatives Commissioner General.
Members representing trade unions affiliated to the UNP and SLFP organized the fast.
A member of the joint trade union alliance called for Cooperatives Minister Bandula Gunawardena to intervene against the arbitrary decisions made by the JVP members, who wax eloquent on workers rights and try to champion against corruption.
The members further noted that in order to save the EDCS, the present board has to be made defunct and operations of the Board should be handed over to a trust management.
