The government has banned the screening of adult’s only movies and is looking at bringing about strict laws against morally incorrect material being circulated in society. It has decided to appoint a committee comprising lawyers, professors, doctors and intellectuals to monitor the strict laws.
Cultural and National Heritage Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena told the media on Monday (27) that advertisements to be carried in the print and electronic media would in future need the approval of the Censors Board.
The Minister also said new laws would be introduced with regard to mobile phones as well. He said the |

license of any mobile phone operator, who introduces various additional information to mobile phone users, would be cancelled following an inquiry into the matter.
According to the Minister, while some international schools carry on in a manner that is not in line with the country’s culture, children being brought up in such a manner pose great problems in the future.
Although the Minister made such a statement on protecting the country’s culture, he took great care not to mention anything about the many karaoke bars and massage parlors that are operating with the blessings of the Rajapakses.
The government has taken over two floors of the Galadari Hotel for the use of government ministers, members and officials. Also, Dr. Ajith Ranawaka and Udyama Niyathapala operate a Russian and Thai massage centers on the same floors. However, this matter seems to have slipped the Cultural Affairs Minister and the cultural police.
